Maritime Law Jobs
Maritime Law Job Description
One of the most highly specialized and nuanced fields of legal practice, maritime law (also known as admiralty law) involves legal issues that arise on navigable bodies of water.
Maritime law is among the oldest branches of law and today the field encompasses a broad array of issues, including:
- Injuries and working conditions aboard ships
- Shipping rules and regulations
- Recreational boating
- Environmental protection
Just like legal professionals in other practice areas, maritime lawyers, paralegals and support professionals may argue cases before courts, draft and review documents, negotiate agreements, interview witnesses and pursue settlements.
One of the most common types of cases encountered by maritime lawyers and legal professionals is salvage. Salvage issues arise when ships are sunk or cargo is lost at sea. In these instances, the ship can be towed, refloated or repaired and the cargo can be recovered by a third-party. Maritime legal professionals are responsible for drafting contracts and enforcing agreements between ship owners and salvors.
