Paralegal Job Description

Paralegals are an essential component of any high-level legal team and the demand for them is on the rise. The need for paralegals will increase by 15% through 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. As a highly sought-after position, paralegal jobs are moving fast.

What does it take to be a paralegal?

While there’s no standard job description for a paralegal, there are a few prerequisites to gaining employment in this role. To get a job as a paralegal professional, you would be expected to possess an Associate’s degree or a certificate in paralegal studies at minimum. In addition, Bachelor’s degrees are now becoming the preferred credential for paralegals among top law teams. Previous experience as a legal secretary, or in another legal industry role, is also becoming the new standard for top firms.

Where does a paralegal work?

Paralegals, as one of the most versatile positions in the legal field, are found in all types of organizations, but most work for law firms, corporate legal departments, and government agencies.

What is a typical day for a paralegal?

As a paralegal, your role is to work closely with attorneys as they prepare for trials, hearings, and closings. As part of this preparation, paralegals often conduct legal research and gather information relevant to the case. Beyond assisting with the case details, paralegals work to identify the appropriate laws, judicial decisions, and legal articles relevant to the case. Paralegals gather and analyze information, then prepare a written report. Attorneys then use these reports to determine how cases should be handled. Often, paralegals also are involved in preparing presentations for the client. Essentially, paralegals play a vital role within any successful legal function.

What’s the difference between a good paralegal and a great one?

A great paralegal professional can adapt to new needs and expectations, as the legal industry is always evolving. Those who find success in the role of a paralegal are usually detail-oriented, organized, and highly collaborative. With varying industries, businesses, and groups seeking paralegal professionals, sometimes the difference between a good paralegal and a great one is exposure.
