Securities Job Description
Stocks, bonds and other tradable assets are heavily regulated at both the federal and state levels. Failing to comply with these regulations could expose companies and individuals to significant civil and criminal penalties.
Securities lawyers, paralegals and legal support professionals help investors and companies adhere to the pertinent laws including the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (also known as the truth in securities law), the Investment Company act of 1940 and the Investment Advisers Act of 1940. They also bring complaints in instances of perceived noncompliance and provide counsel on behalf of those accused of not adhering to the law.
Securities law career outlook
Before and after the great recession, highly publicized cases of fraud and deception on Wall Street put a renewed emphasis on enforcing compliance in the securities market. As a result, the demand for qualified, talented securities law professionals is on the rise.
