Medical-Legal Professional FAQ's

1. Do I need a legal background?

Not necessarily. Previous work experience as a legal nurse consultant is helpful but not required. We are more interested in your nursing background and exposure to medical records. You must be a registered nurse with a minimum of three years clinical nursing experience.

2. Does Special Counsel offer benefits?

Special Counsel is proud to offer a full range of benefits including health, dental, vision, 401K, paid vacation, paid holidays and other monthly incentive programs.

3. Can I be assured of full-time work?

Special Counsel’s contract positions may last a few days or may require a 40-hour workweek (and potentially overtime) until the completion of the project. Some projects can last months and even years, but contract work can be unpredictable by its very nature. Cases can settle in the middle of litigation, the focus of the case can change, or a short-term project can turn long-term. Regardless, please remember that our goal when you complete a project is to put you on another assignment that makes sense for you and our client.

4. Can I work from home?

While you may have been able to work from home as an independent Legal Nurse Consultant, we have found that our clients prefer to have the medical records reviewed in their office, or within Special Counsel’s Project Center outside of Washington, DC where they can better protect issues such as Privacy Act, Work Product protection, and Chain of Custody.
