Professional Support Manager (Attorney) - NYC Office of Am Law Firm

New York City Office of Am Law Firm is looking for a Professional Support Manager. Qualified candidates should work/have worked at Am Law recently as well as have experience in project finance or corporate law and in the knowledge management arena. 

Candidate should be an experienced lawyer who will help develop the Group’s Knowledge Strategy and shape and influence policy and implement projects to meet the Group's knowledge needs, with particular focus on Project and Asset Finance; monitor developments in the legal and business environment, particularly in those work areas, to keep both the Group and its Clients up to date and identify areas to develop the Firm's reputation and practice; provide legal and practical expertise to support the Group's practice through responding to fee earner queries and the mentoring of junior lawyers; help to create, develop and manage the Group's collection of forms, precedents and research materials; organize, design and deliver Group training; work with Group members and BD & Marketing to identify opportunities to develop business from new and existing clients; and provide other Knowledge support as needed.   Specific responsibilities described below may vary depending on Group's needs

Responsibilities

Lawyer Training and Technical Expertise

  • Work with the Group and HR/Professional Development to identify practice-related training needs of the Group; organize, design and deliver (personally or with others) Group training, including seminars, workshops and offsite training
  • Occasional involvement in firm wide training programs, as required, including core training programs and induction courses
  • Mentor trainees and associates
  • Be a source of legal, market and practical expertise for all members of the Group and more widely around the Firm, including the provision of direct support for client matters where appropriate
  • Current Awareness and Thought Leadership

  • Keep group informed about important developments in the law or business environment
  • Use their knowledge and expertise to identify trends in the law or business environment and help develop new legal products, identify possible new services, and suggest innovative ways to deliver the Firm's services more efficiently to its clients.
  • Prepare regular current awareness newsletters for the Group and the Firm's clients
  • Work with librarians to determine requirements and policies and to implement processes regarding practice-related current awareness and alerts from internal and external sources
  • Author and publish research on legal developments or new areas of law relevant to the Group
  • Standard Forms

  • Draft standard forms and develop accompanying notes
  • Ensure standard forms are updated to reflect changes in law, regulation, market standards and best practice
  • Know-How

  • Create practice notes and other useful know-how
  • Operate and implement procedures for capturing, filtering, storing, accessing and disseminating know-how within group
  • Develop material on Firm intranet / KM systems and encourage fee-earners to use intranet, KM systems and other know-how sources
  • Client-Facing Initiatives

  • Work with the BD and Marketing Department to identify opportunities to develop business from new and existing clients through articles, briefing notes, client training, etc.
  • Matter Management and Collaboration

  • Work with the various groups to establish processes to capture matter descriptions and categorizations in the Matter Profiling System, and conduct post-matter review
  • Central Knowledge Projects

  • Contribute to global knowledge programs and projects to support Firm innovation, collaboration and efficiency.
  • Miscellaneous

  • Assist lawyers with queries.
  • Attend regular meetings and provide professional support updates to meeting.
  • Attend external training and conferences to keep up-to-date with relevant developments in the law, business environment and professional support.
  • Attend regular meetings of Professional Support, Knowledge and training meetings.
  • Evaluate individual lawyers' contributions to know-how, training and knowledge sharing and provide timely feedback to HR and heads of Group.
  • Assist in the implementation of wider Knowledge Department and Professional Support initiatives and projects as required.
  • Essential Job Requirements

  • Have done this role at another firm or sound legal experience in law firm or corporate legal department.
  • Commercial awareness and client orientated approach. 
  • High professional standards with commitment to quality product.
  • Excellent drafting and research skills.
  • Well-developed organizational and communication skills.
  • Understanding of learning process and different ways of training.
  • Personality to make impact in group and to shape and influence policy.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to interact with people at all levels, including other support areas.
  • Pragmatic, self-motivated, flexible and good team-worker.
  • Lateral thinker with initiative to establish, implement and complete projects.
  • Good IT skills, including proficiency in MS Office, ideally experience of iManage/document management systems
  • Education and Qualifications

  • JD required
  • Must be admitted in US jurisdiction 
  • Minimum of five years experience either in this role at a large law firm or as a corporate attorney at a large law firm
