Trusts & Estates Paralegal

Special Counsel is currently recruiting an experienced paralegal for versed in all aspects of the administration of probate estates and trusts for a metro Detroit law firm.  Competitive salary and benefits package.


  • Performs research and prepares a summary of research results as requested.
  • Drafts legal documents and proofreads for accuracy.
  • Prepares correspondence.
  • Files documents and pleadings with various courts and other agencies.
  • Summarizes legal documents, deposition transcripts, etc.
  • Assembles all estate planning documents, including deeds.  
  • Analyzes records provided by clients, CPAs, banks and corporate fiduciaries, identifies assets held at death, values all estate assets utilizing IRS-approved methods, and calculates accruals.
  • Drafts Federal and State Estate Tax Returns and proofreads for accuracy.  The candidate must have experience with the preparation of federal estate tax returns (Form 706) and federal gift tax returns (Form 709) and should have familiarity with fiduciary income tax returns (Form 1041).
  • Analyzed financial records and drafts internal office inventories, Probate Court Inventories and Fiduciary and Trust Accountings
  • Provides guidance to clients and fiduciaries regarding estate administration tasks and provides information to CPAs to facilitate income tax return preparation.
  • Assists clients and others in collecting estate assets by compiling required legal transfer documentation and completes claim and new account forms.
  • Manages checkbooks for Estate and Trust funds and maintains accountings of funds received and expended.
  • Qualifications:

  • Degree or certificate in paralegal studies preferred
  • Five or more years of probate paralegal experience preferred
  • Strong organization skills and an ability to prioritize and multi-task
